Interview Techniques

Preparation is the key to any successful interview; it gives you confidence and it is always obvious to interviewers which candidates have prepared and which have not.

The following steps are vital to give you a successful interview.

 

Preparation - before the interview

  • Learn all about the establishment : Research in Local Papers, look at the website and Ofsted reports

  • Take up opportunities for informal contact

  • Request information on interview format

  • Research the role and organisation, prepare examples of your skills and competencies

  • Draft likely questions and consider responses – for example why do you want the job, what are your strengths and weaknesses, what are the main tasks in this job

  • Check your route to the interview

  • Practice your interview skills

 

On the Day

  • Dress to Impress, dress smart! Remember the interviewer(s) will remember you if you look and act the part.

  • Read through your application and take it with you

  • Make a list of questions for you ask about the position /Establishment/pupils

  • Allow plenty of time for travel

  • Don't be late!

 

At the Interview

  • Be confident

  • Be honest

  • Ask for clarification when a question has been asked that you don't understand

  • Avoid yes or no answers

  • Don't swear or use slang words

  • Don't lie! The interviewer may recognise you’re lying. Even if you get the job, your employer can dismiss you if they find out

  • Be aware of your body language

  • Be aware of your tone of voice

  • Talk about bad experiences in a positive manner

  • Quote real examples of when you've used certain skills

  • Turn off your mobile! Treat the interviewers with respect and give them your undivided attention

  • Don't read from notes or your CV, otherwise it will look that You aren’t familiar enough with your own history

  • Don't criticise former employers or colleagues. Talk positive about your former experiences

  • When discussing salary, know your market worth and start by quoting a little higher than this

  • Keep your answers focused on how you can contribute to the company

  • At the end of the interview

  • Prepare some questions to ask at the end - use it as an opportunity to find out more about the role and the company. But don't ask about money or perks just yet!

  • Don't be afraid to ask what the next stage of the interview process will be.
