Coppice Performing Arts School is an 11 – 18 age range mixed community comprehensive including a resource base for students with moderate learning difficulties.
Coppice has just experienced a major rebuild/refurbishment under the Building Schools for the Future programme, with building work having totalled £17million. Our final phase of building was opened in January 2013 and included exciting new Art, Technology and ICT teaching areas. Previous phases included new teaching areas for all subjects, a brand new Sports Hall, state of the art theatre, drama, dance and music recording studios. The huge investment has resulted in not only a fantastic newly re-modelled school, but also in the transformation of learning. Our 4 learning zones "Discovery", "Performance", "Creative " and "Communication" provide "House bases" for our tutor groups and bring together related curriculum areas and resources.
The school has shown consistent improvement in its overall examination results and in the 5+ A* – C % including English and Maths rates over the past five years. The examination results in 2013 were record breaking; the best ever in the history of the school, with 60% achieving 5+ A* – C including English and Maths and 92% of students achieving 5+ A* – C grades.
At Post 16 - 100% of A Level students achieved pass grades and all students who wished to progress on to university have successfully done so. 54% achieved A* – B (or equivalent) grades, which is significantly higher than the national average. 88% of AS Level Students also achieved pass grades.
Currently over 900 students (140 at Post-16) are on roll, and there are 120 members of staff (including teaching and support staff). Coppice is over-subscribed - in recent years there have been far more first preference choices for Year 7 than there are places. The atmosphere in school is tangibly friendly and relaxed but has an underlying orderly and disciplined structure; the students are therefore well behaved, cheerful and hardworking.
Coppice works closely with partner primary schools with which there are strong, extensive collaborative ties. Formal collaborative links also exist at 16 – 19, where the school supports city-wide curricular initiatives, as well as working in partnership with other providers to offer a broad range of opportunities.
Coppice was designated as a Performing Arts school in September 2003. This has extended the range of opportunities for all students, and enhanced partnerships with local schools and community groups. The school's wide range of performance activities in dance, drama and music has impacted positively on both the local community and across the city as Coppice's reputation for high quality small, medium and large scale performance events has spread. At a local level, the school generally, and its performing arts specifically, is very much seen as a beacon of light. The support the school receives from the community it serves is considerable.
Each year the school undertakes a musical production. The 2012 production was 'Our House' which was successfully staged at the Grand Theatre Wolverhampton. In 2013 we hosted the first school show in our iconic "Somnium" Theatre; our chosen show to mark this occasion was "Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat". In 2014 an increased cast of young people will perform "Oliver!"
At Key Stage 3 students follow courses in English, Maths, Science, Music, Drama, Dance, PE, Art, Modern Foreign Languages, Geography, History, RE, ICT, and Technology. In Year 7 Humanities is studied via "Learn to Learn" - a thinking and skills based curriculum.
At Key Stage 4 students follow a core programme of English Language/Literature, Maths, Science, PE, ICT, RE and Citizenship via Humanities and up to 4 option choices including GCSEs, BTECs and Cambridge Nationals.
Many Post-16 students continue their studies into Further Education. A wide range of courses are available, leading to certification at A level and BTEC Level 3. We work mainly in collaboration with 1 other local high school as well as participating in the city wide curriculum offer. Progression rates are very strong and NEET figures are minimal due to proactive ongoing IAG within school and with other agencies.
As part of our inclusive approach, our provision is personalised to enable students to follow both COPE "Inspire" and EXPLORER, which are geared to enable students to achieve a minimum five qualifications at GCSE.
The school maintains a Vertical Tutoring system to create a sense of a 'family' atmosphere, and improve the support; care and guidance students receive about their learning. The school is divided into 4 'Houses'. Each House has 10 forms and each form consists of students from Years 7 – 13 who meet daily at Academic Tutorials. This allows students to make strong links with other year groups, promotes peer mentoring and sharing of experience. Vertical Tutoring at Coppice has proved to be extremely successful.
At Coppice we are committed to providing every student with the highest quality opportunities for personal development.
We provide learning and teaching that matches individual needs, challenges and inspires minds and ensures that every young person aspires to achieve their personal best.
Coppice Performing Arts School is an oversubscribed 11–18 age range mixed community comprehensive situated to the North East of Wolverhampton. We are a popular first choice for students joining Year 7. We currently have a roll of around 925 students (140 at Post-16). Additional Year 7 places are planned to assist in supporting the demand from parents and their children.
As part of Wolverhampton Building Schools for the Future we have completed a full refurbishment with the provision of new facilities totaling £17.5 million. This provides all students, and our local community, with a state of the art, 21st century learning environment.
We are incredibly proud of the achievements of every single Coppice student as they seek to achieve their "personal best". Over the last 4 years our student results have broken the school's "best-ever" record year on year.
In 2014 our students excelled themselves achieving GCSE results of 61% 5A* - C with English and Maths and 93% 5A* - C. In 2014 the Government introduced new performance measures for schools. In this more academic measure, which includes a 3rd high level GCSE, Coppice students once again retained their achievement in line with national average.
At A level Year 13 achieved an impressive 100% pass rate. This exceptional achievement has been maintained for the second consecutive year and all students gained their first choice university places in 2014.
At Coppice everyone is dedicated to supporting our students to achieve their successful futures.
